Dutch indie pop act Yakuni Tunes is releasing their debut EP “wallow” on IJsvogel Records, an Utrecht-based independent record label, this May. On “wallow,” Yakuni Tunes – helmed by multi-instrumentalist Thomas van Gaalen – mixes luscious layers of synths, thick bass lines, harsh drum sounds and dreamy vocals to create a catchy and psychedelic indie pop sound. Yakuni Tunes’ sound takes inspiration from acts such as Porches, Steve Lacy and Juan Wauters. Lyrically, the EP covers instances of insignificant, brief, day-to-day sadness.
The project is visual as much as musical; for the EP and the accompanying live shows – which will be recorded and released as live videos – Yakuni Tunes is working closely with several visual artists, who are creating made-to-measure animation projections to go with the live shows and the textured sounds of the EP. Yakuni Tunes’ debut single “wayshewalks,” which saw a release on streaming services a week ago, has now been released with a video made by upcoming illustrator and animator Timon Vader. Vader’s artwork will also appear in the visuals for Yakuni Tunes’ live shows.
