An Interview with Sky Orchid

Sky Orchid is a band of two brothers, Gabriel and Daniel Traknyak based out of Houston, Texas. They play and write awesome music that has been aired on college radio stations and can now be streamed on any platform! They mostly record themselves but have worked with award winning studios and producers out of Bogotá, Colombia, Sugarland, Texas and Kansas City, Missouri. They have also worked with great cinematographers like Beatwatch, Silver Camera Media LLC, and Vessele. Type Sky Orchid to see their music videos and songs on YouTube, Spotify, and more.

We spoke to them about their inspiration and new music on the way.

For our followers who may not know you guys, can you give us some background on how you got started? What made you want to take music seriously?
Hey Anderson, hey everybody, we are Sky Orchid! Thanks for having us on Upstream Indie! We’re two brothers Gabriel and Daniel Traknyak. I’m Gabriel and I’m the oldest. I’m Daniel the youngest. We started playing music 10 years ago and started writing more seriously about 4 years ago. We’ve also played and written music with a lot of great bands, studios/producers and friends.

How would you describe your style?
A mixture of indie rock and chill alternative. We listen to a lot of different music than each other but we’ve made a sound that we both like and understand.

What’s the experience been like of being in a group as brothers?
It’s a huge benefit because we can hold each other accountable to continue working and progressing in our music without worrying about it affecting our band or relationship. We argue just like any other band but being brothers we’re forced to work through it. We’re also a lot more willing to work together because we will be there for each other in the end. There are definitely cons with having your sibling as your bandmate but we wouldn’t change it. It makes us feel more rewarded with the end result and more connected to the music.

Have have you two progressed musically since releasing your first project in 2017?
The idea of progression is subjective to either of us. Gabriel being the melody and vocals and me being the percussion and rhythm. As a band, there was a lot of learning that took place. We looked at our instruments in a different way and thought how we could make them fit into the composition as a whole instead of what each instrument could do individually. We disolved everything and brought it back again. Which is physically impossible to do but not in art.

How have new life experiences impacted the creation of your new album “Paradise In Limbo” that’s on the Horizon?
Confidence is important. You can’t make good music if you aren’t confident. Getting better at controlling your emotions is always good too. Life as an artist is always a trip. Wether it’s music or writing. Sometimes you get into blocks like when you think you hit the top when you actually have a long way to go, and other times you think you’ve made it, but then you take a wrong turn right back to zero. A lot of non-mainstream bands struggle with gaining a lot of momentum at one point and then ending up at point where they don’t know where to go from there.

Once the album is released, what do you hope people take away from the album?
To us, the lyrics and album meant many things but we hope the audience is able to create their own connections and realities of what the songs mean to them. We focused on creating a sound that we would like to listen to even after 10,000 times. Of course it’s a long process but we love it and we hope everybody else loves it to.

Has the current pandemic effected you as artists in any way?
As a band we had a lot more time to work on music. As regular individuals we fortunately don’t know any family or friends with the virus yet. We’ve been staying safe by staying inside most of the time. We’re lucky to just be bored and nothing else.

What can fans do to support you?
Search Sky Orchid on YouTube and Spotify for our music videos and songs! We just released a music video for ‘I Am On Fire‘ and we’re also releasing a new song, ’Running For President’ very soon so definitely look out for that. If you are local in Houston, Texas we’d love to see and meet you at our shows.
