An Interview with Remy Keene from The On My Mind Podcast

Remy Keene is the host of the Christian-themed ‘The On My Mind Podcast.’ We spoke to him about how he started the podcast, his new Youtube channel, and tips for aspiring podcasters. Read the full interview.

When did you start creating The On My Mind Podcast? What inspired you to take the first step in creating it?
I first started The On My Mind Podcast in July of 2019. I had thought about a podcast for a long time before that, July was when I finally took the steps to get started. I started it because I had a lot to say and wanted a creative platform to let out my creativity. I created the podcast as an outlet, but soon I planned for it to be a help to everyone who might listen. If my listeners could change something about the way they look at other people or their opportunities to impact their day, then it would be an awesome impact that The On My Mind Podcast could have.

What do you hope listeners take away from your podcast?
I hope to inspire my listeners to have a better day by changing the way they see themselves and the opportunity they have to impact the people around them. Our approach to our day can cause good or bad to come our way. I use a mindset of servant leadership to help my listeners be the change they want to see. We are all a leader in some way in our lives, even if we are not in a leadership role. We set the example and can inspire others to conduct themselves with kindness and respect just by delivering the same to the people we encounter. I go along with my listener, I am not the best at all the things I share about, but that is okay, we can journey together becoming better one opportunity at a time.

What’s been your favorite episode?
I have so many favorite episodes of The On My Mind Podcast. I really enjoyed “Be Confident In You” because if we have self-confidence then we can feel better about ourselves and overcome negativity when it comes our way. Stepping out of your comfort zone is hard and this episode even challenged me when I talked about being better in taking that step of faith. If I did not get up the courage to start the podcast I would not have been able to have the impact I have had so far.

I was a quiet and shy kid in school, I did not talk much and I even took a lower grade so I did not have to get up in front of the class to talk out loud. I was too embarrassed about what could happen. I am so glad that I have learned how important it is to speak up about things you care about. I started public speaking more when I was offered to help teach a small group at my local church. That got me out of my comfort zone and I surprisingly loved the opportunity to share. I wanted to be able to find a way to do it regularly.

We noticed that you recently started a Youtube channel as well. What’s it been like adjusting from an audio-only podcast format to being on video as well? Which format do you prefer?
I started the YouTube channel to help more people hear about the podcast. Video and Audio offer 2 different opportunities to engage with The On My Mind Podcast. I enjoy both platforms for their own reasons. I love audio only because I can be more raw and real, having more of a conversation with my listeners. I like to create an opportunity to have a community to reach out to. I hope to eventually have a community of people who build each other up. Video, on the other hand, is amazing because you can connect with a viewer in a different way. I plan to use it also as a short video option. When I have an idea that will not make up an entire podcast episode, I can use Youtube to share it in a quick manner. Both are great ways to get the good things I share out to more people.

What advice would you give people who may be interested in starting a podcast?
The best thing I can tell you is to pray about it, then just start. If you have doubts, that is normal. It is so easy to doubt the impact you can have by doing small things. Take the leap of faith and start. Do not be afraid to start where you are and grow from there. I started by recording in my commute to and from work. I had no editing experience, all I had was an iPhone and a pair of headphones. I have grown and learned along the way. The only thing I regret about the podcast is that I did not start it sooner. I am so rewarded to hear the stories of people getting the boost they needed from the episodes I record. My advice, just start from where you are.
